Penderwicks in the Spring

Its about this little girl named Batty. She plays the piano and has five siblings. Her music teacher calls her into the classroom one day and informs her that she has a beautiful signing voice. "Like an orchid in a daisy field." She plans to have a concert on her eleventh birthday. Meanwhile, her second oldest sibling, Sky, is having trouble with her best friend Jeffrey. Jeffrey has been a close friend of the Penderwicks for a long time. But he doesn't seem to accept the fact that Sky wants him as her friend and not her boyfriend. One day Batty eavesdrops on one of their conversations. Sky says a couple of hurtful things. Things that Batty wasn't exactly meant to hear. But Batty doesn't tell anyone. She keeps it all inside.
Sky's conversation with Jeffrey eventually turns into an argument, and she sends him away.
Batty misses him horribly. And how will she have her grand eleventh birthday concert without Jeffrey? There comes a point where Batty can't take it anymore. She decides to take the bus to Boston by herself to go visit Jeffrey. Fortunatley, her friend Nick, who just came home from war, finds her at the bus stop and drags her back home. After many explanations and apologies and hugs and kisses, life sort of goes back to normal. And Batty has a wonderful grand eleventh birthday concert in which she reveals her singing voice to the family.
