El Deafo by Cece Bell

When Cece is just 4 years old, she gets really sick and loses her hearing. Cece has to wear hearing aids, but luckily she goes to kindergarden at a school with a room full of children who are just like her, so her kindergarden experience is pleasant. But when she leaves her best friend, and moves to a small town that doesn't have a hearing program, there is trouble. First of all, she has to wear this big, bulky, hearing aid called the phonic ear. At first, she doesn't like it, but then she realizes it's sort of like a superpower. She can hear her teachers wherever they go, even when the use the bathroom! She pretends she is a superhero called, "El Deafo". It takes a while, but this is a moving graphic novel, about Cece growing up, and getting used to life being deaf. A cool thing about this graphic novel, is that this is based on the authors life! El Deafo is a great graphic novel!
