My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George

I would recommend this book, although not for rising 8th graders because it is slightly for younger kids, and I am rereading it, but it is still a great and interesting book. Sam Gribley leaves New York City to his great-grandfather's farm, where he lives all by himself for about a year. If you are into nature, and living off of nature, this book is for you. There are other books in the series, if you enjoy this one.
