The War that Saved my Life is about a girl named Ada that has a twisted right foot. Her mom thinks Ada's foot is ugly and wouldn't get it fixed and she also wouldn't let Ada out of the flat. Ada's little brother Jamie is normal, their mom only lets Jamie out. But during the war, their mom sends Jamie to be evacuated, leaving Ada behind. Ada secretly, tries to learn how to walk on her bad foot, and Ada goes with Jamie secretly to be evacuated. They meet their new owner for the evacuation, the owner's name is Susan. They all struggle living with each other, but later on they get along.
Ada also learns to ride horses, their owner owns a pony named Butter.
