The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill

This was a amazing book! I could hardly put it down. It’s about a town who thinks that they have to sacrifice their babies for the Witch (who is actually friendly and would never do anything to a baby or a child) so that she doesn’t destroy all of them. Every year, sorrow hangs around the town, which is called the Protectorate. They leave the babies in the Forest, where the Witch (Xan) takes them, feeds them starlight and then takes them to the Free Cities where they are placed with a good family. One year, Xan accidentally feeds one of the babies moonlight, which makes the child magic. Xan names the baby Luna and takes her in as her own. As Luna’s 13th birthday approaches, her magic comes with dangerous outcomes, and a volcano, quiet for a long time, starts to rumble. Enter a young man determined to kill the witch, a madwoman, a swamp monster, a tiny dragon, and a true witch.
