As punishment for trying to steal a stuffed goat from the principal's office ( don't ask) Tara (the main character) gets sent to live with her aunt, uncle and cousin in Willow Falls, a town full of birthday magic. Soon, Tara meets the woman who is at the heart of it all and is forced to agree to find 13 objects before her 13th birthday. As Tara looks for the objects, she makes friends with people she would have never talked to otherwise and even finds a little bit more about herself.
In the book they talk about life as a game, there are the side lines and then there is where the all action happens. Like Tara in the beginning of the book, I mostly stick to the side lines because it's easier but you don't make that many friends that way. I liked seeing Tara learning to play where the action is.
For me, it is a great book about friends and finding every little piece to repair part of the world.
