The Wednesday Wars by Gary Schmidt

The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt is 262 pages long and it takes place in New York in 1967. It is about a seventh grade kid named Holling Hoodhood who, on his first day of school, thinks his teacher, Mrs. Baker hates him after she makes him sit right next to her and read Shakespeare. The Vietnam War is raging and all Holling’s father is worried about is the family business, architecture, and one of the places he is trying to work, which, unfortunately, has some serious connections with Ms. Baker. But soon Holling starts to enjoy reading Shakespeare and soon enrolls in a Shakespeare play, the Tempest. But the play just might interfere with his chances to meet the Yankee’s superstar, Mickey Mantle.

Overall, I loved The Wednesday Wars and I could not stop reading it. I highly recommend it, especially for kids in 7th grade.
