Shabanu: Daughter of the Wind by Suzanne Fisher Staples

If you could ask the author/illustrator of this book one question, what would it be?

Shabanu is a strong-willed girl who lives in the Cholistan Desert of Pakistan. She has been allowed freedoms that most Muslim girls have not. Her older sister is going to get married, but when an encounter with a rich landowner destroys her sister's marriage, Shabanu has to change the plans of her life, too. This means giving up her spouse, and marrying a wealthy man with many wives. Will Shabanu listen to her heart, or uphold her family's honor? This amazing book shows what it is like being a Muslim girl growing up in Pakistan. It. Is. Incredible. If I could ask the author one question, it would be if she ever went to Pakistan, and if not, how she knew the lifestyle there.

Shabanu, Daughter of the Wind, has a sequel: Haveli, about Shabanu's daughter.
