What books would you recommend to the main character of the book and why?
Slavery is over, but Sugar and her family, living on a plantation, still feel like slaves. But Sugar has a way of finding fun for herself, especially with forbidden friend Billy, the plantation owners' son. One day Chinese workers are brought in, and the adults fear that the Chinese will replace them. So Sugar must find a way to unite the two groups together. I would recommend books like Who Was Sojourner Truth to Sugar, because books about slaves who escaped and changed the world might be empowering to her.
