Full Cicada Moon by Marilyn Hilton

It's 1969 and the Apollo 11 mission is getting ready to take off. Meanwhile half-Black half-Japanese Mimi is struggling to fit in a predominantly white Vermont town. Now what she looks on the outside is all anyone seems to notices. She also struggles with fitting in at her new school too. Even as she stand ups for her right to stand out by competing in science competitions going in to Shop instead of Home Ec. Even though people are not very fond of her mixed race family, she still dream of becoming a astronaut-no matter who tells her she can't.
