Scraps of Time 1960 by Patricia McKissack

This book takes place in Tennessee in 1960 during the time of segregation.  The message of the book is that everyone is equal.  This book is a historical-fiction.  Patricia C. McKissack is the author of this book.  She has written over one hundred children's books and is also a Newberry Honor winner.  This book takes you on the adventure with Grandma Gee (Abby) who travels up into her attic with her grandchildren and is making a scrapbook of times from when she was younger, because their family reunion is coming very soon.  While she is up in the attic with her grandchildren she tells them what it was like in the 1960s and about segregation and sit-ins.  If you would like to travel back in time to 1960 I would encourage you to read this book.

I loved this book so much.  It was a touching story but it was also fascinating.  I would like to read more by this author.  I would five it a 10 out of 10 stars.

Sugar by Jewell Parker Rhodes

This book takes place on a sugar cane plantation in Louisiana in 1870, and is narrated by a ten year old girl, named Sugar.  The main message of this book is that you can choose for yourself and that nobody else can make big decisions for you.  This book is historical-fiction.  This book takes you on the journey of a free, African-American girl, who works on a sugar cane plantation in Louisiana.  Her mother died of a sickness and her father was sold as a slave a couple years back and now Mister and Missus Beale take care of her.  She brings the whole River Road (the name of the plantation she works on) community closer together, even Mister Wills (the owner of River Road) comes closer to his workers. He even hires new workers to work on his plantation.  I would encourage you to read this book if you want to know what happens to Sugar.

I liked this book a lot.  It was a heartwarming story and its details were incredible. I would like to read more by this author.  I would encourage you to read this book because in every chapter there is a new adventure and also because of how beautifully detailed this book is.  I would give it a 9 out of 10 stars.

Moby Dick By: Herman Melville

Moby Dick is narrated by a boy named Ishmael. The narrator is a reliable source of information because Ishmael was there during this story and witnessed all the events that took place during this story. This book takes place in the 1850s in New Bedford, Massachusetts. This book is a classic by Herman Melville. Herman also wrote Typee, and Billy Budd. This book is about a young man whose name is Ishmael. He goes on a whaling ship called the Pequod. He learns how to whale and what to do after you kill the whale. Sadly their captain, Ahab is after only one whale, named Moby Dick. Moby Dick is huge, and Ahab could only imagine, how much oil and money he could make. He also wants to kill Moby Dick because the whale took off the captain’s leg a couple years back. I encourage you to read this book to find out about the adventures of Moby Dick, Ahab and Ishmael. I like this book because, it is more an educational book. Not only does it take you alongside the captain and teach you about whaling it also encourages bravery and to find courage within yourself. I would like to read more by Herman Melville, because I love the way he explains everything and how he has so much detail in his book. I would give it a 10 out of 10 stars.   - Brianna

CHECK IT OUT!

Invisible Girl by Mary Hanlon Stone

Invisible Girl is one of those books that gets you so caught up in it, that you don't want to put it down. I would recommend it to readers, maybe 11-16. It is very well written, and pretty realistic.
When I read books where the climaxes seem small, fake, or planned, the book disinterests me. It is as if the author wants the main character's life to be as close to perfect as possible, and that isn't real. You can already tell that there will be a good outcome. Sometimes you'll even be able to tell WHAT will happen.
There are people who like to read fairytales, but even in fairytales there are real troubles. Like in Cinderella. If you're reading Cinderella for the first time, you will be indignant for hoew Cinderella is treated by her step-sisters and stepmother. You'll be happy when she gets her dress; you'll be anxious when she dances with the prince and has to leave before midnight. You'll probably find it a little strange that Cinderella is the only one in the kingdom who wears a size 5 1/2, and no one really ever gets a happily ever after, but those parts are what makes a fairy tale a fairy tale.
An unrealistic and un-relatable to fairytale is sleeping beauty, which passes off to most young girls that you'll get to marry the prince if you're pretty enough, since the prince really didn't know sleeping beauty at all.
I like books that make you unsure about the ending or what's going to happen next. That's What Makes A Book Interesting. When you have some idea of what's going to happen, then reading the book becomes pointless.
Invisible Girl not only has a good storyline, but it has you all over the place just like real life does.
In the book, 14-year-old Stephanie's abusive mom leaves her and her dad. Her dad needs to fix some things, so he sends her to live with her rich uncle and his family.
When she starts hanging out with her cousin Annie and her friends, she realizes how far behind them she is socially. Stephanie's clothes are out of style, her mom used to be a bartender, and still passes out drunk most nights; Stephanie still hasn't gone through puberty yet, and she doesn't have Facebook, or friends, and so she spins a web of lies just to fit in.
And when Annie finds out, well... that's where things get interesting. One thing I absolutely like about this book is that Stephanie ends up driving Annie crazy.

It's always fun to see the underdog drive the mean girl crazy. - Khallori

This book is like The Hunger Games, but with many tweaks that make it unique! The main character, Beatrice Prior choose Dauntless as her new faction instead of her old faction and renames herself Tris. She works very hard to get through initiation stage at Dauntless, and she makes it. Sort of. In the trilogy, the whole city's government and everything the people recognize changes. Read this book! A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L'Engle

When beginning A Wrinkle in time, I had heard great reviews on it, and after having read it, I agree! Although I am not sure what time Madeleine was writing about, for Charles Wallace (the younger brother of the protagonist, Meg Murry) who is only going into grade school in the next year seems highly sophisticated. In the beginning of the book you find Charles Wallace preparing sandwiches, meaning he would have to handle with a knife. Now, I don't know about your family, but if I were that young my mother would never let me handle a knife that young.

I'm unsure about another use of words in the beginning of A Wrinkle in time. When Meg is walking home in the first chapter (or maybe it was a flashback...), one of her peers taunts her by saying: "Please Meg, we aren't in Grammar School anymore". I am curious as to what grammar school is, although by the name I take that is another name for Preschool or Kindergarten.

Madeleine wrote with a beautiful style in this book, but I can tell she wrote it for children of a lower reading level after reading other books she had written (e.i. The Arm of the Starfish). She made simple language work for her, and although restraining her vocabulary, she came out with a book that puts her writing to glory. - Rose

Now, with poetry, Lonnie has a new way to show the world about his life, friends, his little sister, and that fire that took his parents. I really enjoyed this book, and how it's all poems from one point of view. Some of the poems are funny, some are sad, some are just about Lonnie thinking. My favorite poem, however, is "All of a Sudden, The Poem",on page 53. It's my favorite because it makes me laugh. But, overall this book was awesome and I hope you enjoy it too! - Emma

I liked the format of this book because on the left side of each page, it shows the name meaning, pronunciation, group, where it lived, when it lived, length, special features, food, main enemy and a "did you know" fact. The book also shows amazing illustrations and awesome facts, I would recommend this book to anybody who likes prehistoric animals.
