Sugar by Jewell Parker Rhodes

This book takes place on a sugar cane plantation in Louisiana in 1870, and is narrated by a ten year old girl, named Sugar.  The main message of this book is that you can choose for yourself and that nobody else can make big decisions for you.  This book is historical-fiction.  This book takes you on the journey of a free, African-American girl, who works on a sugar cane plantation in Louisiana.  Her mother died of a sickness and her father was sold as a slave a couple years back and now Mister and Missus Beale take care of her.  She brings the whole River Road (the name of the plantation she works on) community closer together, even Mister Wills (the owner of River Road) comes closer to his workers. He even hires new workers to work on his plantation.  I would encourage you to read this book if you want to know what happens to Sugar.

I liked this book a lot.  It was a heartwarming story and its details were incredible. I would like to read more by this author.  I would encourage you to read this book because in every chapter there is a new adventure and also because of how beautifully detailed this book is.  I would give it a 9 out of 10 stars.
