The book is about a kid named Thomas and his younger sister, Birdie who were looking for freedom. They have been raised as slaves since they were young. They followed the North Star and soon crossed paths with a Union soldier. They were treated by the soldier as if they were his children. But when they were continuing their journey north with the soldier, the soldiers were called to battle in Pennsylvania. Will Thomas and his sister survive the bloodiest battle in the American Civil War.
