The Moon and More by Sara Dessen
I expected a lot out of this book, but it wasn't as great as I hoped it would be. In this coming of age story, Emaline tries to figure out what she wants with her boyfriend, father, and life. She goes from being the perfect girl who got into Columbia, has an amazing boyfriend and friends to the girl who got into Columbia but can't go because her father is a really mean guy who lied about tuition, broke up with a jerk of a boyfriend who cheated on her after three years of commitment, friends who are struggling with their own romances before college, a ten year old half-brother who is great with real estate, and a summer fling that hopefully won't last (I know, that was a really long sentence). Overall, it's a fun quick read (400 pages does count as quick) with some romance but a lot about discovering who you are and how you affect the people around you.
Sarah Dessen did a good job with this book, but compared to her other books (Along for the Ride, This Lullaby, etc.) this one wasn't amazing.

What Else is New
I watched The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and was extremely disappointed. The movie didn't feature Luke, Isabelle, Alec, or Hodge as much as I thought it should have. Also, the scene where Valentine gets the Mortal Cup was completely off. So was the acting, which needed a bit more work. Lily Collins was fine but I didn't think she did a great job with the character. Jamie Campbell Bower was fantastic as Jace except he lacked the defensive side that Jace has, but I am guessing that was due to the script which wasn't that well thought out. Valentine did not look like Valentine. I wish Valentine wore a blonde wig or something but nope, he did not so he looked inaccurately portrayed. The casting could have been done a bit better because since they are going out for the long run, the characters need to stay looking young which doesn't seem like it's going to work out with the various ages of the actors.
Especially Alec who looks like he's thirty. Oh wait, the actor is twenty-eight! Could that be a concidnence?

The Mortal Instruments: City of Fallen Angels
Contains some spoilers:
So...Jace and Clary can finally be together! YAY! But it's really messed up at the same time because someone is controlling Jace after he died. The reason for that is because once a Shadowhunter is born, they are weak to strong demonic forces that want to control them. Since Jace died, the protections that he had no longer protected him. So Lilith, the mother of all demons, is controlling Jace and causing him to stay away from Clary. On top of all that, Simon is two timing (Maia and Isabelle) and is being sought after (but the hot Jordan protects him for some time). Turns out Lilith wants Simon to raise the horrible Sebastian from the dead and accomplishes just that after a bunch of stuff. Now Jace and Sebastian have this connection that makes them brothers, which is completely sickening. I just hope that Jace and Clary stay forever and together.
Sebastian must die! MUAHAHAHAHA *Sorry, I don't like Sebastian. He killed Max.*

Horrible Histories: The Woeful Second World War by Terry Deary and Nick Baker
I know what you're thinking. IT'S A NON FICTION BOOK. I'M NOT READING IT. But this book is different. Most history books on WWII state the leaders, important battles, the basic timeline, etc. But as I said, this book is different. It includes things about what happened at the concentration camps. Gruesome things that not just the Germans did, but the Americans and British too. Heroic stories of animals. Myths and legends of things that went on during the war. Being one of the only non fiction books I enjoyed, if you want to hear about what ACTUALLY happened during the second world war, you should read this book! -David

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan
Nick is still heartbroken over being dumped by Tris, a beautiful but very dramatic and difficult person. So when he sees her at one of his performances, he randomly asks a girl to be his girlfriend for five minutes while Tris comes up to him with her model boyfriend. Norah, the girl he asks, agrees. The five minutes they agreed on stretch out into hours as they go around New York and fall in love with each other and music.
It's a predictable but sweet love story and a quick read. I definitely recommend this book and the movie! -Mary

The Mortal Instruments: City of Glass by Cassandra Clare
Sometimes I wonder if should hate Cassandra Clare because of all the heartache she puts me through. When you are a fanatic reader like me, you begin to have a certain addiction for a lot of books. Especially when the two people (Clary and Jace) you want shipped together cannot because it's incest (which isn't illegal, but it's slightly gross). Anyway, I just finished the third book of the series and I just realized that the series is not called "Mortal Instruments" but "The Mortal Instruments." I apologize for any confusion there. Other than that, the third book of this series is a mix of the first and second. There is romance, action, a lot more magic, but in this case the story is a lot more about trust. Like, do you trust your father, the man you spent most of your childhood with? Or do you trust a best friend who is a different creature? Or can you trust a werewolf and vampires and Fair Folk and warlocks? I think this book is deeper than the others and holds more meaning to what it means to be a Shadowhunter. Nevertheless, I hope that Jace and Clary don't let their feelings get in the way of their duty to the world.
Just a prediction for the next book: I think the real Jonathon is going to come back and destroy the world. -Mary

Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare
I previously wrote a long response on the first book in the series, City of Bones, which was filled with mixed reviews. However, the story is getting better. The second book has a lot more action and you get to see Clary participate more in the Shadow World. Not only that, but some interesting stuff happens between Clary, Simon, and Jace. Nevertheless, this book lacks the romance it had in the first book where Clary and Jace had a thing going on until (SPOILER) they found out they were related. Bummer. I would write more but that would spoil the entire book and possibly the series. All I can say is that this book has a lot more creatures, demons, and action then the first. -Mary

An Abundance of Katherines by John Green
Shall I need not say more than what I already have? John Green is awesome. I think everyone who is anyone knows that. However, when I read this book I was extremely happy because he didn't do that weird thing:
me: i like carrots
boy: so do i.
me: we should buy carrots
I like that style, but when it's just a novel and the characters are somewhat normal, the dialogue should stay standard. Anyway, this book is about a guy named Colin who only dates Katherines (creepy, huh?) and is trying to overcome his latest breakup with the 19th (SPOILER: also first) Katherine. This leads him to go on a road trip with his Muslim bud (WHO IS AMAZING AND WILL MAKE YOU LAUGH SO HARD ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO BEES) and end up in the middle of no where. If I say more, I'll spoil a great story. So, I will not type anymore but only tell you this: READ THE BOOK READ THE BOOK READ THE BOOK. :)

Mortal Instruments: The City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
I'm not sure whether or not I like this book or hate it. To me, it's an original story with unoriginal ideas that were altered. In my personal opinion, I felt like I was reading a rip off of the Harry Potter series. Why you may ask? Well, for starters, the Mortal Instruments. These instruments are three objects that are powerful and I clearly remember that there were three objects from the Deathly Hollows that were also considered powerful. Then the invisibility which seems a bit too unrealistic and too much like the invisibility cloak. Three strange kids, one girl, two boys, invisible. Sound familiar? Then the antagonist is named Valentine (for me, too similar to Voldemort). Then you have your Institute (Hogwarts) and a country hidden from people with the use of glamour (a.k.a. Mist from Percy Jackson and also the fact that people couldn't see Hogwarts or Hogsmede). There is also the name calling of humans. In this book it' ;s mundanes, in HP it's muggles. You also have your demons where you have to fight off and kill (Supernatural) and the vampires vs. werewolf wars (Twilight). Not only that, but a bird (like Fawkes except Hugin is a bad bird) that has ties with Hodge who is basically the Dumbledore of the Institute, except Hodge is a jerk. Then there is Luke who is sort of like Snape because of how Snape betrayed Voldy, similar to the way Luke betrayed Valentine. You also have your Circle which is equivalent to your average Death Eater. I may be forgetting some other stuff, but I can't remember much more.
Like I said previously, I sort of like this book despite all the rip offs. The idea of combining worlds together is sort of ingenious, but I wish Clare wrote it in a more original way. For starters, she could have picked a better name for the main character, Clary. It may just be me, but Clary sounds a lot like Harry. Not only that but the characters were total rip offs (yay, I remembered!). Clary is a red head, who doesn't follow directions, and is short tempered. Who may that be? Ginny Weasly. Then Jace who looks like Draco and acts like him in a more loving way. Then you have Alec who has black hair who might be Harry, but I'm not sure on that one. But if she did change them in a way where they were totally unrecognizable as Harry Potter characters and a lot more like fresh beings, I would totally love the book. But for now, I am not liking it.
However, I do plan on reading the rest of the series because I want to know what happens to them and if the books do get a lot more original.

Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher
Long time no post (work and summer school take up a lot of time). Anyway, I ordered a bunch of books and I will be writing about them all (since I've finished most of them).
One of the fabulous books that I bought happened to be Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. In all honesty, I always had a strange longing to read this book since everyone wouldn't shut up about how good it was. I want to thank all those people for giving rave reviews because Thirteen Reasons Why deserves just that: a rave review.
This book is about a girl, Hannah, who commits suicide and decides to tell her story through cassettes. She makes seven tapes, and addresses them to thirteen different people who are supposed to pass the tapes to the next person who is addressed after them. The story is narrated by the ninth person on the tapes, Clay, who happens to be the average smart, to-good-to-be-true type of person.
I personally loved Clay because when Hannah said something that was befuddling, Clay would clarify. Not only would he help me understand Hannah's story, but he wasn't one of the people who did anything wrong (in my opinion). Clay is a great character and he really makes the story real. To him, Hannah wasn't an imperfect slut (even though she was rumored to be one) she was a girl who he wanted and would never get. It's a love story, a suicide note, and a bunch of other stuff crafted into this really good book.
In other words, CLAY IS AMAZING AND YOU SHOULD TOTALLY READ THIS BOOK BECAUSE JAY ASHER REALLY GETS THE CHARACTERS RIGHT AND TELLS HANNAH'S STORY AMAZINGLY AND THE BOOK IS REALLY GOOD AND WILL MAKE YOU FEEL ALL SORTS OF THINGS!!!!
I probably should have started with that and ended with that ^.

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief is a twist of all the legends and stories of Greek mythology. It is also the start of the fascinating series. At first I myself wasn't sure of whether I would really like the series but my brother told me about how much he loved it and after watching the movie I thought the book wouldn't be so bad either. This is how I gained the love of Greek mythology. After reading this book I was attracted to the others in the series and found a great passion of mythology/fantasy reading. This was one of the greatest books I have ever read, I give this book a 5/5 star rating and highly recommend it to all of you mythology lovers out there.

Physics for Future Presidents by Richard Muller
It's a great book that tells you all the physics you need to know to be president (although I don't plan on becoming president). The 1st chapter is on terrorism. It explains the physics of past and possible future terrorist attacks, such as how the Twin Towers collapsed and the probability of terrorists engaging in nuclear warfare. The 2nd chapter is on energy. It explains different ways of getting electricity and gasoline. The 3rd chapter is on nuclear weapons and nuclear power. It explains how to calculate the expected excess deaths from a nuclear bomb or nuclear waste spill and different versions of nuclear reactors. The 4th chapter is on space. It explains the practicality of sending humans to space and what speed a rocket needs to reach to orbit Earth. The 5th and last chapter is on global warming. It explains the solutions and nonsolutions for this dangerous problem.

I loved this book. The Golden Compass is part of a trilogy. I am definitely reading the next one. It is pretty philosophical yet mythical (an interesting mix). "Dust", a young girl, a kitchen boy, Daemons, and love, friendship, death, and betrayal. A fast paced action book. It is great for adults, teens, and tweens alike. It is beautifully written (knowing some of Philips other work it would be). It is a definite read again. JUST READ IT, READ IT, READ IT!!!

All-American Girl by Meg Cabot
This might as well be my favorite teen romance series, only because of the characters Sam and David. Sam is this rebel artist who is madly in love with her sister's (her sister is the popular smart cheerleader type) rebel artist of a boyfriend. Anyway, as she continues to fall head over heels for Jack (her sister's boyfriend) her relationship with David, the President's son, strengthens. Oh and the only reason she knows David is because she saved his dad's life by jumping the man who attempted to assassinate the prez. Overall, this story is filled with humor, love, and really good music taste.
I recommend this and any Meg Cabot book for the girls out there who want a fun quick read.

Unwind by Neal Shusterman
The Cambridge Harvard Summer Academy's "The Ties That Bind Us" course has forced me to read the book Unwind by Neal Shusterman. This story is rather strange and something I wouldn't have found if it weren't for CHSA (a round of applause for their good choice in books).
Anyway, this story is about a solution for those who were pro-choice or pro-life during the Heartland War in the USA (which never happened, this story is sci-fi). The USA has decided to come up with the Bill of Life. This bill declares that abortion cannot happen until a child is between the ages of 13 and 18. During that time period, a parent can choose to "abort" or "unwind" their child. This means that the child's body organs will be unwound from them and will be given to others who need them. This allows the child to be alive in a really messed up way. Weird huh? But it gets weirder.
So there are three kids, Connor (16), Risa (16?), and Lev (13) who all were to be unwound but they escaped. Connor's parents didn't want him. Risa was part of the state ward who had to unwind her due to budget problems. Lev is a tithe for his family. Lev is the most interesting character so far in the story because he is the one that changes the most. He goes from being totally up for unwinding (note: not many people dream of being an Unwind) to someone who doesn't think of it as a good idea, which is a big change. I would tell you more about the story but I am not done and I can't say much without giving it away. However, I do suggest that you read it because it's really good!

Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl
I bought this book out of curiosity and because I heard it was a decent book. Plus, it's part of a series which means I can read more of the story!
Anyway, I didn't like the beginning. It wasn't grabbing and it just sounded like Ethan was complaining about how is life in Gatlin County sucks and how we wants to get out. Basically, it was just whining. I was close to abandoning the book until Lena came in.
I like Lena. She is unpredictable which is nice in a story where its set in a predictable town. Lena brings a spin to the story and makes it much more interesting. Every action of hers is pretty important since she is powerful. However, I did find her annoying in the sense that she was stubborn and constantly thought she would go Dark. **SPOILER ALERT** The thing is, she didn't. She's only Light and Dark which is weird. I don't understand that. What I also don't understand is why she didn't just choose to go Light and kill all those who were Dark. In reality, Macon would have died both ways which really wouldn't have mattered. **SPOILER ALERT OVER**
I think Macon was my favorite character because he was mysterious and different. He is headstrong and does what he thinks is right even though others disagree. Macon is cool and reminds me of Hagrid and Dumbledore's love child (except he looks better than whatever the two warlocks would produce).
I would recommend this book to people who did enjoy Twilight, HG, or HP. It's one of those magical books with weird creatures and love. Like I said before, the beginning is slow but once you get into the 200s, the story gets really interesting.
Enjoy!

What I Saw and How I Lied by Judy Blundell
This is an award winning book about a 15 year old girl named Evie (Evelyn.) All she wants to do is grow up fast and be like her mother. Her mother is overprotective and tells her, she doesn't have to grow up fast. Joe, Evie's stepfather comes back from the war and is drinking alot, and receiving annoymous phone calls. He suddenly decides to take a trip down to Florida. They stay in a hotel. One night Evie discovers that a high school dance is happening in the hotel ballroom, and dresses up in her mother's clothes to make her look older. At the dance she feels stupid and went out to the pool. There a man asks her to dance. Evie finds out his name was Peter, and he was an ex-GI during the war. Suddenly, her mom is taking long shopping trips, the Grayson's (a couple from the hotel) are fighting, and Evie finds herself right in the middle of it. This is sometimes a very, very, very inappropiate book.

Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan
This is rather an interesting book. The reason I decided to read this book was because of John Green. I had previously read The Fault of Our Stars (I recommend), a book that was worthy of my tissue box which had encouraged me to read Will Grayson, Will Grayson.
This book took me a bit by surprise. It is basically about two people named Will Grayson, same age, same state, different lives. The Will Grayson that writes like a human (uses Standard English Conventions) happens to have the biggest (physically) gay best friend in the world. That is one of the main reasons why I found the book interesting. It revolves around love between the same sex. It's not often you come across a book that portrays being gay the same as being straight.
The book deals with the difficulties of being gay. There are occurences where there isn't anyone like you, so you turn to the internet for love. Sometimes you find it, sometimes you don't. Sometimes it happens to be your "friend" pretending to be a non existing human who you happen to like. Sometimes you can meet the love of your life in front of a porn shop.
This book shows that love can exist anywhere, everywhere, with whomever. It is a book that I have not finished but a book that I like. So I suggest this book to those who are into characters who write funky (Will Grayson) and characters who write like humans (Will Grayson). Just kidding. I think that anyone who is looking for a little love, laughter, and a bit of hope can find it in Will Grayson, Will Grayson.

The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan
It all starts when Percy's class has a dodgeball game at school. The other team, Percy found out aren't human, they're Laistrygonian monsters. Tyson, Percy's cyclops brother, and Annabeth save Percy and bring him to Camp Half-Blood. When they arrive there were two Colchis bulls attacking camp. They also found out Thalia's tree had been poisoned. Chiron is suspected of poisoning the tree and was fired.
Grover tells Percy in a dream that he's being held prisoner by a Cyclops and that he's in the Sea of Monsters (mortals know it as the Bermuda Triangle.)
Percy and Annabeth ask for a quest to save Grover and also to find the Golden Fleece, the magic that will save Thalia's tree. But Tantalus (Chiron's replacement) chose Clarisse, daughter of Ares to go. So Annabeth, Percy, and Tyson sneak off with Poseidon and Hermes help. This book is action-packed and amazingly detailed and even though it's my second time reading it, it's still fantastic and always will be. So I recommend it (but read The Lightning Thief first.)

The Pact by Jodi Picoult
I finally finished this book, but part of me feels as though the story is incomplete. To me, it seems as though that Chris's life is worthless now that the girl of his dreams is dead while people still believe that he *SPOILER ALERT* is the murder even though he was declared not guilty. *SPOILER ALERT IS DONE* Anyway, the story had less of a twist then her other novels which is a relief. You can only read so much Picoult without being completely ruined.
On that note, I definitely recommend this book. It's a bit of a depressing read and it takes awhile for the real awesome action (when they are in court) to begin but it's worth it. So good luck and enjoy the book.

The Ghost of Crutchfield Hall by Mary Downing Hahn
The Ghost of Crutchfield Hall is a wonderful story based on fantasy. It tells about the life of a orphan that lived in a orphanage with a cranky caretaker. One day, her uncle she never knew she had opened the doors to a new start and invited her to live with him in Crutchfield Hall. When things start to look good, the little orphan meets her aunt and everything starts to go South. Then when it seems like nothing could make it worse, Sophia, aunties perfect daughter's past life comes back as a ghost. She starts to have mixed feelings of confusion and utter terror, not knowing whether she should be happy, freaked out or both.
"Uncle said the dead did not return. He was wrong." If that does not encourage you to read the book then I have no idea what will.

Tall Story
This book is about a girl named Andi, and her brother, Bernardo. Andi, her Filipino mom (or should i say mum), and her English dad live in London. This book is about how her "long-lost" brother, Bernardo, finally reunites with the family after he leaves San Andres in the Philippines for London, England. But there are some catches. After all, Bernardo is REALLY tall (and when i say that i mean REALLY TALL!) and has an interesting(and mystical) past. This book is really good and i recommend it to anyone with a good taste in books, and to people without.
If you’re still not convinced, this book is a Tallulah and Blanche Book Awards book, which pretty much proves how awesome it is.
