When Reyna sets off with Nico and Coach Hedge to return the big statue to camp half - blood, surprises turn up. The Athena Parthenos is doing a horrible job of keeping monsters at bay. Even worse, Nico is driving himself too far.
Reyna is doing what she can to help him, but she doesn't know how Nico bears all of his pain.
Coach Hedge needs to get to camp, because his wive, Mellie, is having their baby.
Even more encounters with gods and monsters are turning up, including the giant Polybotes.
As the quest goes on, Leo starts to realize that he's going to have to die.
Jason worries for him. Besides, it turns out that Jason is doing other things too.
Leo has to do more trickery with Hazel, Frank, and Piper. He knows that all of the others will hate his plan so he doesn't tell most of them.
To sum it all up, everybody's having a hard time.
In The Blood of Olympus, Rick Riordan gives new aspects of the quest and new surprises, including a table that has a holographic image of Coach Hedge yelling, "Put some clothes on!!!" some urges to shoot smoked hams into people's stomachs, and battling a god with a small disk that decapitates someone.
New and old rivalrys are destroyed and dispelled while new friendships are made. The gods are made both Roman and Greek, and there is still peace.

Before the battle with the giants, they talk about families, and Annabeth mentions that she has an uncle and a cousin. That uncle has some problem with her dad. I wonder who the cousin is.
After the battle, however, Zues knows that someone has to be blamed for this huge disaster. Zues sends Apollo to Olympus, and our heroes suspect that Apollo is being blamed.
Apollo also hinted that Zues can turn him into a mortal.
These two topics hint two new series... Guess what they are...
