this book is set in the world of pern, much like earth only with different animals. the people there have lived on that planet for 2500 years, or turns to them. every 200 turns, the red star (another planet) passes close to pern and sends deadly thread, which eat away at every organic material. the people of pern use mighty dragons to char the thread out of the sky. one day, readis and alemi are going fishing when a sudden storm hits them. they capsize and seem about to drown when they are rescued by the legendary shipfish, who can speak and say they are called "doll-fins. mam'ls, not fish." this sparks a lifelong friendship between the dolphins and readis, only 7 at the time. despite strong hatred, readis eventually runs away and starts the dolphin crafthall, even with the whole of pern searching for him. what will happen? will he be found? or will the ancient days of dolphins working with men finally be restored?
