Before We Were Free by Julia Alvarez is an historical fiction book about a girl who lives in the Dominican Republic during the sixties. She has to struggle with her tyrannical ruler and nobody taking her seriously.
If I could recommend this book to anyone, I would recommend it to somebody who liked the book "How Tía Lola Came to Stay" also by Julia Alvarez.
